Man remanded over ganja trafficking in Cuyuni

A man who allegedly had a quantity of cannabis in his possession was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on July 19 at the Cuyuni River Backdam, Mark Cox of 47 Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara had in his possession 904 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Cox pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when it was read to him by the magistrate. The defendant in his defence told the court that he is the sole breadwinner of his family and asked the magistrate to grant him reasonable bail.

The prosecution objected to bail stating that the section under which the defendant was charged does not allow for bail except in special circumstances.

Cox was later remanded to prison and his matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for August 4.
