A 64-year-old woman, who was standing at the side of the road, died early yesterday morning after two vehicles collided along the Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road and slammed into her.
Latchmin Lalta, a market vendor, of 192 Hope West Enmore, ECD was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). In a press statement yesterday afternoon the hospital said that Lalta and three injured persons were rushed into Accident and Emergency at approximately 7 am yesterday.
Tiffany Squires, 23, and Margaret Scott, 46, both of 36 Eastville, Annandale, ECD and Amardat Bhojedat, 50, of 40 Eastville Housing Scheme, ECD were treated for various injuries at the hospital and released.
According to the GPH release, Squires sustained injuries to the forehead, Scott injured her right foot and Bhojedat complained of back pains.
Lalta, a relative told this newspaper, sold at the Annandale Market. The 64-year-old woman left her Enmore home early yesterday for the Bourda Market, Georgetown where she normally bought a “load” to resell at Annandale.
“She de done buy she load and so,” the relatives explained, “and people tell we is jump out she jump out this bus yesterday morning and waiting to cross de road when she get knock by these two vehicles.”
A motor car, proceeding east and another vehicle moving west along the Public Road “slammed into each other”, eyewitnesses told Lalta’s relatives.
The car, relatives said they were told, lost control and hit Lalta who had been standing at the shoulder of the northern carriageway waiting to cross the road.
“They tell we that after she get this hit she fly up the air…if you see how bad she get damaged. Police really need to get the two drivers, especially the car driver,” Lalta’s relative stressed.
Police up to late last night had not issued a statement on the matter. Stabroek News was unable to ascertain whether the drivers were taken into police custody.
