A man, who allegedly assaulted and injured both his wife and eighteen-month-old daughter, was on Monday remanded to prison.
Yamesh Looknauth, of Lot 60 Bel Air Village, pleaded not guilty to the charge of threatening language and two charges of unlawful assault when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He denied that on August 15 at his home he used threatening language to his wife, Fiona Looknauth. He also denied that on the same day and place he unlawfully assaulted her and his eighteen-month-old daughter.
The prosecution stated that the couple had a dispute over his disappearance the day before the incident, which resulted in the defendant-who had a chopper in his hand-hitting his wife to her head while she was holding their daughter. They said that the defendant afterwards pushed his daughter out of his wife’s hand and that the child hit herself to the back of a chair before hitting the ground.
The defendant, the prosecution said, had afterwards dealt his wife a slap across the left said of her face.
The prosecution further stated that the defendant had also threatened to kill his wife. They then asked that bail be refused for the defendant since he was currently on a peace bond for a similar offence.
Fiona, who was also present in the court, had stated that she had medical certificates for her and her daughter on the injuries that they had sustained as a result of the assault. The magistrate subsequently ordered that the defendant be remanded to prison and that he appear back in court on August 21.
