Labourer accused of raping nine-year-old girl

A 35-year-old man, arrested six days after being on the run for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl, was charged with the offence at the Fort Wellington Court on Thursday and Magistrate Krishndat Persaud refused him bail.

The court heard that Talbert Mc Pherson, a labourer of Hopetown Village allegedly had carnal knowledge of the girl on August 12 at Number 30 Village. He was also charged with sodomizing the child on the same date.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Grace Bristol asked that bail be refused on the grounds that Mc Pherson is facing charges for a similar matter and had reportedly committed the offences while on bail.

She submitted too that the offences are serious and if bail is granted it is likely that he would flee the jurisdiction and would not attend court.  The prosecutor also said that Mc Pherson “was caught in a different station district.”

The magistrate asked whether he was represented by a lawyer and the defendant pointed to attorney-at-law Perry Gossai who then informed the court that he was in fact representing the man in the other matter.

Police, acting on information, arrested him at a house at Manchester, Corentyne on Tuesday afternoon.

He is scheduled to return to court on October 1 for report.
