Chongqing mayor donates $9M in equipment for farmers

Mayor of the Chongqing Municipality of China, Wang Hongju has donated $9M of equipment to the Ministry of Agriculture for distribution to local farmers.

During an official visit he also inked co-operation agreements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), a Government Information Agency (GINA) release said.

Wang’s visit is to explore new areas of cooperation between Guyana and the Chongqing municipality, with a view to strengthening economic cooperation between Guyana and China, the release noted.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the municipality and the ministry provides opportunity for the promotion of trade between the two countries and will serve as a framework for future economic and trade exchanges between Guyana and Chongqing.

Moreover, the MOU encourages increased investments from the Chongqing municipality in key sectors, such as infrastructure development, agro-development, canal navigation, real estate development, and the processing of agricultural goods.

According to the release, it will also facilitate consultations and exchanges between Guyana and Chongqing with the establishment of a consultative mechanism, where the Embassy of Guyana in Beijing and the Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office in Chongqing will be able to discuss work plans for cooperation and exchange programmes between the two sides and oversee their implementation.

The MOU was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, and Secretary General, General Office of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, Chen Heping. Meanwhile, the strategic co-operation agreement between the municipality and the GCCI aims to stimulate investment opportunities for Chongqing’s businesses in Guyana.

Following the signing of the agreements, a luncheon was held in honour of the mayor’s visit at the Chinese embassy.

Mayor Wang was also scheduled to visit the operations of BOSAI group in Linden.
Chongqing is the largest and most populated municipality of the People’s Republic of China. It is also the only one of these municipalities in the western region of China.

The municipality of Chongqing has a registered population of 31,442,300 (2005) and spans over 80,000 km², the release added.
