Children’s community care service launched in Region Three

The Social Services Ministry and the Region Three RDC on Monday launched the Children Community Care Point Programme which aims at providing service to orphans and vulnerable children.

In a press release the regional administration said the programme was launched with a two-day workshop funded by UNICEF, at the regional boardroom in Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.

Regional Chairman Julius Faerber told the workshop “children are valuable assets… we must ensure that they are given constant and consistent support,” adding that parents are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that they develop their children’s potential. He also said the workshop was a timely reminder of people’s moral, social and cultural responsibilities. Faerber then urged the participants to share their knowledge with orphans and vulnerable children in their respective communities.

In giving an overview of the programme UNICEF Consultant Sandra Hooper said the two main objectives are to mobilize regional personnel to partner with service providers and develop awareness programmes which provide service to vulnerable children in communities. Hooper said she is optimistic that a regional committee will be established to oversee and monitor the programme in various communities.

According to the release more than one dozen women attended the sessions.
