A man who allegedly sold cocaine to a policeman and another accused of selling cannabis to another policeman, in separate incidents, were both ordered yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to be remanded to prison.
Thirty-eight-year-old Hughvel Franklyn of Lot 78 Roxanne Burnham Gardens pleaded not guilty to the charge of trafficking in narcotics.
Franklyn denied that on September 11 at Stabroek, Georgetown, he trafficked in one gramme of cocaine by allegedly selling it to Police Constable Jeffrey.
His lawyer Adrian Thompson applied for reasonable bail for him on the grounds that his client was not found with any cocaine in his possession.
He said that when a search was conducted on his client’s person no cocaine was found on him.
The lawyer argued that if his client really had sold the policeman the cocaine then he would have had some more in his possession. He said that this was not the case.
The prosecution objected to the bail application on the grounds that the offence was non-bailable and that the police alleged that Franklyn was indeed the person who had sold him cocaine.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Franklyn be remanded to prison and that the case be transferred to Court Five for October 27.
Meanwhile, Gary Hope also pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
He is accused of trafficking in two grammes of cannabis by allegedly selling it to Constable Simon on September 11 at East La Penitence.
He also denied that he was found with 12 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking on the same day and place.
The magistrate subsequently granted him bail in the sum of $35,000 for the trafficking charge while she ordered that he be remanded to prison for the possession of narcotics charge.
He will only be released if he is granted bail for the possession of narcotics charge.
Hope’s cases were transferred to Court Five for October 27.
