A scrap iron dealer was yesterday granted bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of breaking and entering a man’s storage bond and stealing a quantity of car parts.
Thirty-seven-year-old Jermaine Anderson of Albouystown pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.
He denied that on September 18 he broke and entered the storage bond of Ray Rahaman and stole two engine heads and 12 truck and car rims, totalling $350,000 in value.
Anderson stated that on the day in question he had just come out of a store and was walking along the road when he observed “some old scrap iron on de roadside” that he picked up and placed in a cart.
He said that as he was attempting to cart off the scrap iron two men approached him and dealt him a blow to his face with a piece of wood.
He said that the men accused him of stealing the scrap iron and subsequently took him to Rahaman who then turned him over to the police.
Anderson said, “they didn’t find me in de place wey they sey I thief de things from.”
However, the prosecution stated that on the day in question Rahaman had secured his storage bond and was about to leave when he observed Anderson fetching out the articles and placing them into a car.
The prosecutor stated that Rahaman then raised an alarm and the car driver drove away. Anderson was then apprehended by several persons and later turned over to the police.
The prosecutor said the articles were not recovered.
The magistrate subsequently granted Anderson bail in the sum of $350,000 and ordered that the case be transferred to Court Three for October 21.
