Woman severely chopped by husband after suggesting separation

A 44-year-old woman was yesterday admitted a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) nursing severe chop wounds to her head, both hands and other parts of her body inflicted by her husband with whom she had a misunderstanding.

When Stabroek News visited Anjanie Mohan in the female surgical ward of the GPH yesterday, her hands were heavily wrapped in bandages that were soaked with blood. Several visible chop marks could also be seen on her upper arms. The entire left half of the woman’s head, closer to her ear carried a gaping wound.

Recounting the incident, the 131 Plastic City, West Coast Demerara (WCD) woman who was crying out for severe pain, told this newspaper that it was as a result of her decision to leave her husband.

The woman explained that some time last month she and her husband were experiencing some domestic problems and she decided to take him to court where he was placed on a bond to keep the peace for one year after she decided not to pursue with the matter against him.

Since then however, the injured Mohan said, her husband’s attitude had not improved and as a result she decided to tell him yesterday that they should go their separate ways. According to Mohan, the man became enraged, grabbed a cutlass and began chopping her mercilessly.

The woman said that she got many chops on her hands and arms because she put them up to protect her head. After the incident, the woman was rushed to the hospital by neighbours.

Relatives and friends who had gone to visit the woman said she was lucky to be alive owing the extent of the injuries she received. Mohan herself expressed similar sentiments, stating that she was indeed lucky and grateful that she was still alive.
