Princess Hotel manager says he was owed millions

The finance controller of the Princess Hotel, who was held with some US$14,000 (nearly $3 million) while trying to board a flight out of the country on Tuesday, has reportedly told the police that money was owed to him.

The Turkish national was held with the US$14,000 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri, minutes before he was scheduled to leave the country on a Delta Airlines flight bound for New York after a report was made to the police.

Stabroek News was told that the man, said to be in his 50s, was taken to the CID headquarters, Eve Leary for questioning and has claimed that the money he had was what was owed to him by the hotel.

He reportedly began working at the hotel about two months ago and its management had allegedly made a report about larceny to the police which led to his arrest.

Charges are expected to be laid against him shortly.

Meanwhile, six suspects arrested in connection with a string of recent crimes, including murder, are still in police custody and charges will be laid against them shortly also.

The men, who were arrested in an Albouystown house, are still being grilled by the police.

The police, in a release issued Tuesday night, said the arrests were made around 4.30 pm on Tuesday, after certain information led them to a house at Albert Street, Albouystown.

The suspects reportedly had in their possession one .38 Taurus revolver, one .32 Smith and Wesson revolver, along with eleven .38 and five .32 rounds of ammunition, when they were caught the police said.

Two of the suspects, the police said, were wanted in connection with the murder of Brendon Charles, the attempted murder of Krishna Persaud, and robbery under arms committed on a businesswoman at Kaneville recently.

On August 8, Charles was discovered dead in a yard in the Kaneville area with gunshot wounds and several marks of violence about his body. Persaud, meanwhile, had been making a purchase in the shop at Lot 319 Third Street, Kaneville around 7.30 pm on September 20 when bandits attempted to rob it. He sustained two gunshot wounds in the process, one to the left thigh and the other in his upper abdomen.
