Janitorial Services ordered to pay ex- staffer in lieu of notice

Chairman and CEO of Universal Janitorial Contractual Services, Eon Edwards was ordered to pay $45,000 representing money in lieu of notice to  the company’s former employee, Rickford Connelly when the matter was brought to court.

An arrest warrant was issued for Edwards when he failed to appear in court and bail was set at $50,000 for failure to show, the Labour Ministry stated in a release on Tuesday.

The Occupational Safety & Health Department  in the Ministry  of Labour  took Edwards  to  court after several unheeded requests to meet with him over charges that he had failed to produce wages records, failed to give notice of termination and failed to pay in lieu of notice, the release said.

Connelly was represented by attorney-at-law James Bond who requested some time to meet with the ministry, and a meeting was granted and the errant employer was ordered to pay $45,000 representing money in lieu of notice.

Meanwhile, in another case the Ministry of Labour represented two workers, Orin Parris and Dave Phillips, in charges against Tigerwood Inc. which had also failed to meet with the ministry on several occasions. Bail was set at $40,000 for the company secretary Anita Mohan.

The release said further that the charges were failure to give notice, failure to pay in lieu of notice and failure to pay severance allowance and the two employees were awarded $150,000 each.
