Rampur Village suspect shot dead by police

A suspect wanted in connection with a recent robbery in Berbice was shot and killed during a confrontation with police on Monday afternoon at Rampur Village, Corriverton.  The dead man is 28-year-old Collis Johnson of Lot 5 Rampur Village.

A police press release issued yesterday afternoon said that “acting on information received, ranks went to Rampur Village in search of the suspect, who was wanted in relation to a recent robbery at Angoy’s Avenue. He started to run and the ranks chased after him, during which time he discharged several rounds at the police who took cover and returned fire.” The incident occurred at about 4:30 pm.

Stabroek News was told that the police received an anonymous phone call informing them that there was a male who was wanted in connection with a recent robbery in Rampur Village with a gun. According to information received, when police arrived on the scene they confronted Johnson, who jumped over several fences in his bid to escape. Johnson reportedly crossed over a canal and after reaching over to the western side reportedly discharged several rounds at the police which resulted in an exchange of gunfire.

After the gunfire ceased, the police searched the area and found Johnson’s body among the bushes. According to the release, police retrieved one .22 pistol with four live .22 rounds of ammunition from the man.

Johnson was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
