AFC lauds GT&T on bandwidth statement

The AFC is pleased that the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) has agreed to provide “unlimited and inexpensive” bandwidth to local and foreign consumers from next year.

In a press release the party said this announcement indicates that GT&T recognises that developing Guyana is paramount even as it recovers its investment and the costs for modernising the country’s telecommunication infrastructure.

The AFC recognises that GT&T has to receive a guaranteed rate of return on its investment and urges it to make every effort to achieve lower rates comparable to those which obtain in other Caribbean territories.

“It is the view of many, that the current long distance rates are exorbitant,” the party said, adding that it supports the negotiations between the government and the company and calls on both sides to exercise good faith in the interest of the people.

Additionally, the AFC said as GT&T’s “20-year exclusive license expires, and even as there are ongoing negotiations with government about the terms of the licence, we take the opportunity to thank them for their service.”
