Crab catcher beaten, two charged with attempted murder

Two Rosignol, West Berbice men who appeared at the Fort Wellington Court on Thursday to answer a charge of attempted murder were granted $300,000 bail each by Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop.

The court heard that on October 27, Derick Ramdowar, 42, a businessman and hire car driver, Narendranauth Boodram, 23, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Aslim Imamdally, also of Rosignol with intent to commit murder.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Grace Bristol informed the court that the victim was in a serious condition at the Fort Wellington Hospital and asked that bail be refused. She submitted that if bail was granted there was a likelihood that the defendants would tamper with witnesses.

Defence attorney, Perry Gossai made an application for bail for his clients. After listening to the submissions Magistrate Ramroop denied the men their pre-trial freedom.

However, shortly after, a brother of one of the accused showed up at the court with Imandally and Gossai then made a request for the matter to be called again.

He then renewed his submissions for bail, asking how the prosecution could say the man was in a serious condition at the hospital when he was present at court.

The prosecutor held her ground and continued to object to bail. She told the court that she had just made submissions about witness tampering and that the brother of one of the defendants brought the man to court.
Imandally appeared to be shaking and could hardly stand on his own.

When questioned, he told the magistrate that he did not know what happened.
Reports are that the men accused him of breaking into a bond belonging to one of them at Cotton Tree, West Berbice. Imamdally who catches crabs for a living suffered injuries to his head, hands and other parts of his body with pieces of wood.

Police had initially handcuffed him to his bed but subsequently released him following further investigations and promptly took his attackers into custody.

He had told this newspaper from his hospital bed on Wednesday that he had gone to catch crabs at the “river flat” at D’ Edward Village around 5:30 pm and while riding his bicycle in the vicinity of the Berbice River Bridge around 8:40 pm he saw two men coming towards him with two pieces of wood. He became scared and tried to ride away from the men while asking “wah happen to ayo…?” They responded by asking, “Yuh like thief na? Yuh bruk me bond.”

He said he tried to tell the men that he did not know anything about their bond and attempted to show them a bag of crabs he was carrying on his bicycle but they dealt him a severe blow to his head causing him to fall.

They also continued to beat him until he became unconscious. The next thing he knew was that he woke up at the hospital in excruciating pain.
