Canje man charged with bicycle theft in Georgetown

A construction labourer pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer the charge of simple larceny.

It is alleged that on November 7 at Albert and Lamaha streets, Rafeek Alli stole a lady’s mountain bike, property of Clint Haywood.

Police Prosecutor Kevin London told the court that the bicycle was later recovered and is in the custody of the Alberttown Police Station. London said that the virtual complainant (VC) parked his bicycle and went to do his business and the accused jumped on the bicycle and rode away. The VC raised an alarm, London said, and public-spirited citizens caught the accused and took him to the station.

Alli, 25, of Canje, Berbice, when questioned about his reasons for being in Georgetown by the magistrate said that he was in town to work on a building on Sheriff Street.
Alli was placed on $25,000 bail and is to return to Court Two on December
