Citizen’s arrest lands man in court on phone charge

Alpha Poole pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. Poole is accused of robbing 14-year-old Kadeem Gordon of one cell phone valued $40,000, on October 28.

The teen’s father, Michael Gordon told the court that on the said day his son telephoned him saying that he had been robbed of his cell phone. He said he immediately went to him and reported the incident at a police station.

He said several days after the incident while taking his son to lessons on David Street, Kitty, his son saw Poole and identified him. He then made a citizen’s arrest and took Poole to the police station where he was charged with the offence.

Meanwhile, Poole who appeared shocked at the allegation, told the court “I never rob he son, but I don’t have a problem paying back foh de phone…Ow I jus come outta jail foh one thing and I dey now looking foh a work and now this…I don’t understand.”

Gordon then told the court that the matter is not about the cell phone, even though he would be pleased to have it back but rather about the safety of his son. He noted that it is no parent’s delight to receive a call from their child or children informing them they that had been robbed, adding that “it could have been a more serious situation.”

Prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana objected to Poole’s bail application on the grounds that he had been previously charged with robbery with aggravation and escape from lawful custody. He noted that if released, Poole may continue to commit similar offences.

Poole, who then appeared distressed, was escorted from the court by a policeman.

He was ordered to appear in Court Two on Wednesday.
