A 24-year-old man of 123 East Canefield Canje, Berbice lost his life when the car he was in plunged into a trench around 8.30 pm at Gangaram; the driver who was under the influence of alcohol is in police custody.
Satesh Praimnanand, a truck dispatcher attached to the Rose Hall Estate was pulled out of the trench by public spirited citizens. He was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital by the estate’s ambulance where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breath analysis conducted on the driver of the car revealed that he was 195 microgrammes over the legal limit of alcohol.
The dead man’s father, Kennard Praimnanand told Stabroek News that the driver of the car who was a close friend of Satesh picked him up with his car around 7 pm and they went to Gangaram.
He said he was at home when he received a message around 9.30 pm that “the car turned over in the trench.” He said he was on his way to the scene when the ambulance passed him at Adelphi, Canje.
He turned back and followed the ambulance to the hospital and when he saw Satesh he thought he was just unconscious. He was hoping that his son would make it but then the doctors broke the sad news that said he had died.
According to Praimnanand, he heard that the car was coming out of a street and it “missed the main road” and ended up in the trench. Satesh left to mourn his two younger siblings, his father and mother, Nagama.
In a release, police said that investigations revealed that Satesh and the driver were both under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The release said too that while the vehicle was travelling along the roadway, Satesh reportedly pulled up the hand brake, causing the driver to lose control of the car which ended up in a trench.
The driver managed to exit the vehicle and summoned the assistance of public spirited persons who then took out Satesh from the vehicle.
