CXC top students to be awarded at BVI ceremony

The outstanding performers at the 2009 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exams will be honoured at the Regional Top Awards Presentation Ceremony set for the British Virgin Islands (BVI) next Thursday.

According to a press release the Presentation Ceremony will be held at the HLS Community College Auditorium at 7 pm and the 41st Meeting of the CXC will be held at the Treasure Isle Hotel the following day. The annual meeting of the School Examinations Committee (SEC) will also be held on December 3 at the hotel.

The eight exceptional students at the May/June 2009 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exam and the seven stellar performers at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) will be honoured at the Presentation Ceremony. Education and culture minister in the British Virgin Islands Andrew Fahie will address the opening ceremony and declare open the council’s meeting on Thursday evening. CXC Chairman Professor Nigel Harris and CXC Registrar Dr Didacus Jules are also expected to address the ceremony.

According to the release, Guyana’s Kia Persaud, Padminee Roshundatt and Sonya Yacoob are among the region’s top students. Persaud of Queen’s College (QC) will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in the region in the CSEC exam and Roshundatt, also of QC will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Per-       formance in Sciences. Yacoob of New Amsterdam Multilateral High School will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Perfor-mance in Business Education. While in the BVI the students and CXC officials are expected to pay courtesy calls on BVI Governor David Pearey, Deputy Governor V Inez Archibald and the education and culture minister. The council comprises representatives of 16 participating territories, the University of the West Indies, the University of Guyana and the teaching profession. The council deals with finance and administrative issues while the SEC deals with technical and examination issues.

The Caribbean Union of Teachers and the Caribbean Association of Principals of Secondary Schools will be specially invited observers at the council meeting. The BVI last hosted the CXC business meetings in 1994.
