GuySuCo working to avoid pay hitch repeat

GuySuCo is working towards avoiding a repeat of last week and intends to pay its workers on time this week, its Chief Executive Errol Hanoman says.

The Corporation was unable to pay its workers on time last week owing to cash flow problems. The delay in the arrival of a sugar vessel was cited as a main contributory factor for this. However, the company was able to pay the workers their wages for last week on Monday.

Quizzed on Tuesday about whether GuySuCo will be able to issue wages on time for this week, Hanoman said: “I expect that we will be paying wages on time this week”. He, however, said that “tough times” were ahead for the company but urged that this should not cause undue alarm. He pointed out that the next crop gets underway in early February and so the absence of sugar production means no cash generation for the company.

In a press release issued last week, GuySuCo said that the delayed ship, which was expected to lift 10,000 tonnes of sugar two Saturdays ago, is expected to arrive in Guyana sometime between Friday and Saturday.
