Charged with fraud over West Berbice land deal

Thirty-eight-old Ansel Chung of Lot 82 Gordon Street, Kitty, was placed on $200,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly fraudulently converting cash that he had received from a woman in order to purchase a piece of land for her.

The cell phone technician pleaded not guilty to the charge of fraudulent conversion when acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

He denied that on October 28, being solely entrusted with $584,000 by Joylyn Stanley so that he may acquire a land at Lot 6 ‘C’ Field, West Coast Berbice, he fraudulently converted it to his own use and benefit.

Attorney-at-law Sash Roberts, who appeared in association with attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson, had applied for bail for Chung on the grounds that her client and Stanley had decided to settle the matter.

Stanley’s lawyer, Gordon Gilhuys had informed the court that his client had since migrated to the US since the police took more than two months to complete the investigations into the matter.

Prosecutor Alexis David Hossanah had requested that bail be granted to Chung in a substantial sum since according to her, Chung had adequate time to settle the matter before it was brought to the court. Chung is expected to make another court appearance on February 21 next year.
