Minister meets displaced workers

Workers of the St Kitts Marriott Resort who were made redundant earlier this month were due to meet the labour minister yestersday, to discuss possible options for re-employment.

Minister Sam Condor met business leaders on Tuesday, to explore partnerships to assist the displaced workers.

The layoffs at the Mariott Resort was the latest in a string of job losses in the Caribbean’s tourism industry, caused by the global financial crisis.

Labour concerns

St. Vincent’s National Labour Congress is warning against employers using the current global economic crisis as an excuse to compromise workers’ rights.

Ahead of Labour Day celebrations in Kingstown the NLC President Noel Jackson urged the congress to be aware of such tactics.

Mr Jack charged that some employers are using the current economic situation “to seek to roll back some of the gains that we have won over the years”.
