Robbery with violence accused gets $75,000 bail

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Tuesday granted $75, 000 bail to a man accused of violently robbing another man of a gold chain and a quantity of cash.

Twenty-two-year-old Wayne Emanuel, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence when he on Monday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that on January 14, at Sheriff Street, Emanuel robbed Collis Sullivan of a gold chain valued $150, 000 and $5, 000 cash.

In his defence Emanuel said on the day in question he was riding along Sheriff Street when he saw his ex-girlfriend (Sullivan’s present girlfriend) who had several lacerations on her face and she allegedly told him that Sullivan had assaulted her.

He said that as they were speaking Sullivan approached him and accused him of robbing him of the said items. Emmanuel said Sullivan then alerted a mobile police patrol and related the same “story” to them.  The man said he was soon arrested and later charged. He further denied stealing the items, adding that his ex-girlfriend had given the police a corroborating statement. The prosecution did not object to bail. Emmanuel was ordered to appear in court on February 18.
