A Plaisance man who was accused of snatching a woman’s gold band and  was later shot by police denied the charge of larceny from the person when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The magistrate  put him on $60,000 bail.

It was alleged that on February 2 at Georgetown, 23-year-old Kevin Williams of 41 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara  stole from Laleta Shivgobin one gold band valued $40,000.

According to the virtual complainant, she had travelled to Georgetown for a medical and was walking at the Stabroek Market square when Williams snatched her band. It fell on the ground, she said, and he picked it up, looked at her in her face and then ran away.

Her husband gave chase and Williams was later arrested.

Attorney Mohammed Zafar representing Williams told the court that his client shares a common-law relationship with his 18-year-old girlfriend who is pregnant. He also stated that at the time of the incident Williams was shot in his leg by the police and still has the rounds in his feet and needs medical attention. On these grounds, Zafar made an application for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum.

He was placed on $60,000 bail and his matter was transferred to Court Two for March 9.
