Man accused of stealing hose from fire station

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson granted $20,000 bail to a 40-year-old man accused of stealing a length of hose from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).

Brian Williams pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Williams allegedly stole the length of hose valued $80,000 last week Sunday.
Police Prosecutor Munillal Seetaram told the court that the item was found on Williams’s person. He said Williams walked into the GFS compound and several firemen caught him removing the hose. They apprehended him and handed him over to the police.

In his defence Williams told the court that he did not steal the hose. He reasoned “I gon go foh thief a hose that I can’t even fetch?” He told the court that he was in front of the fire station when the firemen approached him and accused him of trying to steal the hose. Williams alleged that they dealt him several blows about his body which resulted in him sustaining a broken rib. He told the court “I would like to see a doctor cause I get a medical to show that I get one broken rib.”

The prosecutor then requested that if Williams was granted bail it should be a substantial sum.
Williams was ordered to appear in Court Two on Friday.
