Boy crushed to death in truck mishap

A 16-year-old boy died late Wednesday at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was rushed after the tray of his father’s truck fell on him at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is Jason De Abreu, a fourth form student of the Golden Grove Primary School. The incident occurred sometime after 4 pm that day, a tearful Scarlett Adams, the teen’s mother, said. She was at home, a short distance away from where the incident occurred at the time. She related that the boy’s father Patrick De Abreu had been transporting dirt to “build up” a lot and had just finished unloading the third load.

Adams said that the truck got stuck and Jason was assisting in helping to get the truck out. “He was jacking the truck up and the jack slip and the tray shake and come down”, one of his siblings, who was there at the time said. Jason was pinned by the tray at his neck area. His father rushed to help him and attempted to raise the tray. When it was finally raised, the teenager pulled out his head but fell down.

He was rushed to the GPH. Adams said that upon hearing of the incident, she rushed to the medical institution, where she was told to wait. After a while, she was told to go inside. “Me seh doctor, me come to see Jason…me see they put plastic on him”, she recalled, tears streaming down her cheeks. She said that a relative conveyed to her that he was dead.

Many of the teenager’s teachers and some students of the school were at the home yesterday. Many were in tears. Jason leaves to mourn his parents, grandparents, four brothers, two sisters and other relatives. He was a “very happy child”, relatives said.
