Fined $30,000 for stealing bottles

A 43-year-old man was on Wednesday ordered to pay a fine of $30,000 or spend 12 months in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of simple larceny when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

On July 29 at Georgetown, Salim Khan stole a quantity of bottles valued $4,080, property of National Hardware Store.

When given a chance to respond, the labourer who told the court that he has no fixed place of abode explained that he was hungry and as a result stole the bottles to re-sell them in order that he may have money to purchase food.

Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that the defendant was a third time offender for the same offence.

The acting chief magistrate advised Khan that he should seek the assistance of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security for directions to Food for the Poor.
