Good Hope housing scheme to be extended

$50M water well for Lusignan

Good Hope, East Coast Demerara is to be extended and 957 more house lots accommodated there, Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali said recently.

Speaking at a meeting in the area to address the residents’ housing and water concerns, he said this was part of his ministry’s continuing efforts to ensure that its services are delivered in all communities in a timely manner, a Government Information Agency (GINA) release said.

More than $257 million has been spent on the development of roads, drains, structures and bridges in the Good Hope area, the release said.

While the minister noted that the development of the new house lots has brought some challenges with regard to water supply, he told residents he has commenced service upgrades to distribution and service connections to ensure an efficient delivery of water supply.

Coupled with these projects, is the $50 million construction of a well at Lusignan to replace the old one. This is being undertaken by the Guyana Water Inc.  According to the release, Ali said his ministry was not satisfied with the water pressure and within three months the well should be completed.

In addition, the GINA release stated, a $133 million contract has been awarded for the transmission interlink on the East Coast Demerara which would aid in the efficient delivery and pressure of water.

However, electricity fluctuations were identified as challenges to the GWI’s production and the housing minister said he hoped the issue will be resolved.  The Guyana Power and Light has embarked on infrastructural upgrades as the company has received a core generator that will add new capacity, the release said.

Meanwhile residents had voiced their concerns about water supply, inflated water bills, drainage and irrigation among other issues to which assurances were given by the minister that a team from his ministry and GWI would visit to address their concerns.
