Mechanic on $100,000 bail over theft of motorcycle

Renwick Gonsalves of 873 La Penitence was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $100,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing another man’s motorcycle.

The mechanic pleaded not guilty to a simple larceny charge that was read by Magistrate Priya Beharry. The charge stated that he stole a motorcycle valued $120,000, property of Gordon Sol, between February 14 and 21 last year.

Gonsalves told the court that he was a mechanic and  Sol had brought his motorcycles to his workshop for him to repair. He said that he took a while to do so and on the day that he was test riding one, Gordon made the report to the police station that he had stolen it.

However, Sol, who was also present in court, stated that Gonsalves had picked up his motorcycle and ridden it without his permission. He said that he had given Gonsalves five other bikes for him to repair.

The prosecution stated that repairs to the five other bikes that Sol had given Gonsalves were not completed after a long time at his workshop and when Sol confronted him about it Gonsalves mounted the bike and rode off.

A report about the incident was made to the police station and Gonsalves was arrested and later charged.

The magistrate subsequently granted Gonsalves bail and ordered that he return to court on September 16.
