The Barrow family on Saturday hosted a fete for Linden, Kwakwani and Mabura students who topped their individual schools at this year’s Grade Six Assessment.
Tiannai Blair of Amelia’s Ward Primary, Oswald Joseph of Regma Primary, Sheeka John of Christianburg Primary, Emmanuel Gilkes from St Aidan’s Primary, Dorielle Retemeyer of Watooka Primary, Naiomi Allsopp of Wismar Hill, Ronacia Forde of One Mile, Jolani Ramkissoon of Mackenzie Primary, Kslin Kersting from Aroaima Primary, Oshana Bruce from Kwakwani Primary and Constance Park of Mabura Hill Primary were all treated to a special dinner ceremony. The students also received a plaque and a sum of cash from the proprietor of Cab’s Hardware and General Store and Barrow’s Restaurant, Hotel and Bar.
In his address Dunstan Barrow committed to keeping track of the children’s performance throughout their secondary school years. He charged them “to be very committed to your work to maintain high grades throughout.” Barrow has also tried to maintain contact with previous awardees. This is the fiftieth award ceremony the family has hosted and, this time it coincides with Dunstan’s birthday.
The ceremony was initially hosted only for top students from Linden primary schools but over time it was expanded to include those from outlying areas in the region. The family plans to include another neighbouring school next year.
Additionally, the Linden Economic Advancement Programme is set to give bursary awards to children of its employees who performed well at the assessment. BOSAI too is poised to reward the top five performers in the assessment in addition to the top ten performers from among its employees children. The Linden bauxite mining company will also reward outstanding performers at the CAPE and CSEC examinations.
