Three more men said to be involved in the kidnapping of Mahaicony rice farmer Parasaram Ramnarace and an employee on Wednesday, have been arrested.
Police sources are convinced that those apprehended are the kidnappers. Two were caught by members of the joint services in the Mahaicony backdam shortly after word of the kidnapping began circulating while the others were picked up hours later.
A senior police officer speaking on the latest arrest, told Stabroek News yesterday that one man was held around 8 on Wednesday night while the other two were arrested around 1 yesterday morning.
They were on the Mahaicony roadside at the time of their capture.
One of the trio, this newspaper was told, was found in possession of $16, 000 and a cellular phone, which investigators believe was stolen from Ramnarace during the incident.
All five suspects are being held in `C’ Divison and will be placed on identification parades shortly.
Police had said in a press release that Ramnarace of Dundee, Mahaicony and Patrick Skeete, of Calcutta also in Mahaicony were kidnapped in the Abary Backlands by five men one of whom was armed with a gun.
Investigations have found that around 3 am Skeete, who is an employee of the Ramnarace Brothers of Dundee, Mahaicony was pumping water in the backlands when the five men assaulted and bound him.
Around 7:30 am Ramnarace was making checks and he too was held by the men who later robbed him of $20,000, a gold ring and other personal items. Demands for a 12M ransom were subsequently made.
It was the swift action of ranks in the Police ‘C’ Division supported by ranks from Headquarters that freed the victims and subsequently saw the arrest of two of the suspects while three others managed to escape.
Joint Services ranks recovered one 12-gauge shotgun and nine matching cartridges.
