Man charged with damaging vehicle door lock

A 35-year-old man who allegedly damaged the door lock of a vehicle was granted $75,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
It is alleged that on November 7 in Georgetown Mark Kanhai of 5 Industry, Railway Line damaged one vehicle door lock valued $70,000, property of Lynette Stephens.

Police Prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant ran away after committing the act. Public-spirited citizens chased after the defendant when an alarm was raised and he was caught, Ramana said.

Meanwhile, Vic Puran, the defendant’s lawyer, asked for reasonable bail for Kanhai who is married and has six children. Puran told the court that he had advised his client without prejudice to replace the vehicle lock.

When Stephens was asked by the magistrate if she would prefer this, she said that she was a businesswoman and while replacing the lock would end the matter she would prefer him to face the full force of the law for his actions since he may do it to someone else.
Kanhai is to return to Court Three for statements on November 23.
