As is customary, the Senior Supervisors’ Club held a simple ceremony on June 4, 2009, for the official opening of its recently covered billiards table. This function got started at approximately 7 pm, with an opening prayer by Pastor Selwyn Sills; also in attendance were Regional Chairman, Mr M Mingo; CEO Linmine Secretariat, Mr H James; along with representatives from the McKenzie Sports Club and other invitees. In his opening remarks secretary of the club Frank Fyffe extended a warm welcome to the gathering on behalf of the club and thank them for sharing in the occasion. He was also optimistic that the opening and small gathering would be a springboard to rekindle the lively activities that the club was once known for. Regional Chairman Mingo in his remarks said it was his wish that the club, which is a landmark in the community, will remain a useful facility within the community where inter-club rivalry will continue on a healthy basis and that its membership will grow.
Linmine CEO Horace James, who is also a patron of the club, reflected on years gone by when the “club was the club,” a hive of activity. He recalled the hype before billiards competitions and the inter-club rivalry between the McKenzie Sports Club and the SSC – the twin clubs – as well as the high level competition with Georgetown and Berbice which always attracted much attention and excitement.
He spoke of the “big guns” that once “ruled the roost,” the intriguing and ding-dong battles: Harcourt ‘The Sultan’ Warde, Keith ‘Jesus’ Mosely, Dennis ‘Tenten’ Naraine, Robert Langevine, Lennox ‘Cowie’ Stephens, Mark ‘Beak’ Alexander, Barron ‘Screw’ Richmond, Sigmund Parkinson and Michael ‘Twiddles’ Edmond, to mention a few. In presenting two trophies for upcoming competitions, he wished the club every success and encouraged non-members to register for membership.
The billiards table which has been in a state of disrepair for quite some time, was able to acquire a covering as a consequence of the management of the club soliciting assistance from former members who are abroad. Through the efforts of two longstanding members, Howell ‘Yellow Man’ Hinds and Ashton Angel, they had been able to make contact with some brothers, and thus the cloth was acquired.
To those brothers who made such a positive contribution, the executive committee and members of the SSC say a big thank you.
President of the Club Robert Langevine in his closing remarks expressed heartfelt thanks to all in attendance, applauding them for their support in the future. The MC for the evening’s proceedings was headmaster of the Linden School of Excellence, Marlon Pearson.
The SSC which was once held in esteem is now struggling to restore some semblance of its former reputation.
Management hopes that through this letter we can reach former members and brothers wherever they are, and re-establish relations.
