The PPP has not lived up to word on presidential powers

Dear Editor,

In 1992, the PPP under the leadership of Dr. Cheddi Jagan promised to change the Guyana constitution to limit the powers of the Presidency and make the position accountable to the people of Guyana. Dr. Jagan was talking about the role of Government and its leaders should not be given a blank cheque without questions being asked; a basic understanding that the president be a public servant not a bully.

The ideology of the core of the PPP has since changed. It is now adopting and extending the Burnham ideology to rule for life.  Burnham did not change the constitution but rigged all his elections.  This drive to change the constitution, the sacred laws of the land, is not for the betterment of the people. It also sets a bad precedent for more dictators to follow.

When will Guyanese become outraged?  “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi.

Yours faithfully,
