Jamaica dominates home team

-Pagon scores third first class ton

fending champions Jamaica led by Donovan Pagon’s third first class century, along with a patient 97 from David Bernard jnr., dominated Guyana on the second day of their fifth round match in the West indies Cricket Board (WICB) sponsored Regional four day match at the Guyana National Stadium Providence yesterday.

Replying to Jamaica’s mammoth first innings score of 441-8 declared, Guyana, who have lost all four of their matches to date were 22-1 at the close.

Royston Crandon got his innings off brightly when he struck Andrew Richardson, through the square cover region from the second ball of the innings, for four.

Richardson had earlier bowled Shemroy Barrington for a duck with the third ball of his second over.

Crandon continued his positive mood, by hitting the final delivery of the day’s play from left arm orthodox spinner Nikita Miller over long on for six to move to 14, whilst night watchman Devendra Bishoo, who struck Bernard Jnr., through point for four, was unbeaten on that total.

Earlier, Jamaica resumed on their overnight score of 149-3, with former West Indies middle order batsmen Wavell Hinds and Donovan Pagon unbeaten on 31 and 39 respectively.

They lost Hinds who was caught by Mohammed at mid off driving at a Bess delivery that was pitched up for 44, ending his 72-run, fourth-wicket partnership with Pagon. He faced 122 balls and struck four fours and two sixes in 133 minutes.

At lunch, Jamaica were 228-4, with Pagon on 76 and Bernard Jnr. on 28.
Guyana should have removed Pagon after lunch, but first Christian and then Johnson (the rebound) floored the chance offered by the batsman off Bishoo when he was on 87.

To add insult to injury, he struck the final delivery of that over through the cover area for four to move to 91.

The 26-year-old Pagon followed it up, by hitting the same bowler’s fourth delivery of his next over for six over long off to post his first century of this competition and third first class century of his career.

He faced 321 balls and struck nine fours and two maximums, whilst batting for 350 minutes.

The shot also brought up the 100 partnership between himself and Bernard, from 139 minutes batting hitting a combined total of eight fours and two sixes from 41.3 overs, with Pagon contributing 52 and Bernard Jnr., 45.
Jamaica lost Pagon, who was run out by Mohammed at short mid wicket for 105, when Bernard pushed a Royston Crandon delivery and refused his call for the single. Overall, he faced 332 balls and struck nine fours and two sixes, whilst batting for 350 minutes, adding 101 with Bernard for the fifth wicket.

Deonarine (2-71) and Bishoo 2-110 were the most successful bowlers for Guyana, who need a further 269 more runs to avoid the follow on.
