Stunning all round cricket from the Cardinals helped them win the Georgetown Leo Club-organised seven-a-side tapeball tournament at the Demerara Cricket Club ground on Tuesday.

In the final Alex Haley’s sterling 25 got Cardinals to 92 off their allotted overs which proved too much for Bad Knights who crumbled to 85 all out.

Cardinals took home the first place prize of $40,000 and Haley was awarded a Digicel phone valued at $17,000 for his performance in the final.

Bad Knights received $20,000.

Action got underway just before noon with Courts, DCC, Cardinals, Bad Knights, Back Road Boys and Conquerors battling for the top prize.

The competition, a fund raising effort to help fulfill the needs of the Leo Club, was deemed a success.

The Leo Club plans to construct a Steel Pan Orchestra for homeless youth to help them develop a skill and participate in an activity which would help to keep them away from negative activities.

A target of $1.8 million has been set by the organization and as soon as that target is achieved the club plans to begin work with youths from the Human Services Drop-In Centre.

Commissioner of Police and guest speaker, Henry Greene, who faced the first ball, stated that the competition was a good move by the organizers and he commended them for proper organization and wished them the best for the venture of trying to give to the less fortunate youth.
