The Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Coca Cola U-15 round robin knockout competition, their final tournament of the six tournaments in the 2008/2009 season, commenced last week at the Tucville playfield.
Fruta Conquerors, Uprising FC, Beacon United, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Marian Academy were the teams to record victories on the opening day while the other match-up ended in a draw.
Beacon and Marian Academy gained their victories via the walkover route from Flamingo and BK International Western Tigers respectively.
Uprising blistered Sunburst Camptown in a 3 – 1 final result led by goals from Keson Dey, Kimba Braithwaite and Yannick Garraway in the 35th, 50th and 68th minutes respectively, even as Camptown’s Ronel Andrews recorded what will be one of the fastest goals of the competition, when he found the back of the net in the first minute of play.
GFC played a tune Riddim Squad seemed to have no answer for, before crumbling to 4 nil in their encounter. The victors were led by a double from Darren McPherson who scored in the 21st and 30th of the first half. Tevis James (53rd) and Dwayne Gordon (66th) propelled their team further into the lead in the second half and a subsequent victory.
Goals five minutes apart from Dwayne Lendie (55th), Pernel Schultz (60th) and Schackille Brown (65th) respectively proved too much from Thomas United even after they drew first blood in the 35th minute, compliments of a Kevin Andrews strike.
Santos’ Jorome Liddell recorded a double in the 15th and 25th minute respectively, giving his team the lead going into half time but two tremendous efforts from Mark Roachel (65th) and Selwyn Williams (70th) found the equalizer for their team Rennaisance, enabling them to hold on for a draw.
This tournament is being used as preparation for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Inter-Association U-15 tournament which is slated to commence next month, with Georgetown scheduled to play on April 12.
The team selected to represent Georgetown will be under the watchful eye of coaches Sampson Gilbert, Rodwell Jemmot and Gordon Braithwaite, with Wayne Forde executing the duties of manager.
It was reported that the referees were engaged in administrative duties on Sunday and were unavailable to officiate, but they will be available for the next round of matches.
In their absence, GFA’s president and secretary respectively Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole were officiators of all matches at the Tucville ground in the competition which is slated to continue on Sunday with six more matches at the Tucville and Camptown grounds.
