Permaul, Bishoo squeeze T&T to give Guyana first innings honours

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Spinners Veerasammy Permaul and Davindra Bishoo combined for seven wickets and steered Guyana to first innings points over Trinidad and Tobago on the third day of their 12th round WICB Regional Four-day match yesterday.

Left-arm spinner Permaul bagged four for 54 and leg-spinner Bishoo picked up three for 48 to restrict T&T to 259 replying to 282 at Queen’s Park Oval.
Chasing Guyana’s modest first innings total, T&T got a stylish half-century from their captain Daren Ganga but the middle and lower-order batting failed to click and T&T crashed 23 runs short of Guyana’s total.

Left with two overs batting before the close, Guyana were zero without loss.
In another rain-affected day’s play, Ganga lashed 92 and received good support from opener Adrian Barath with 38 and his younger brother, Sherwin Ganga (36).
Earlier, T&T resumed on their overnight position on 53 for one with West Indies youth batsman Barath on 29 and skipper Ganga seven.
The pint-sized Barath was first to be dismissed with the total on 71, caught at second slip by Christopher Barnwell off the bowling of pacer Brandon Bess for 38.
The right-handed Barath struck six fours off 75 balls during his innings.

The in-form Darren Bravo joined Ganga and added an important 63 runs for the third wicket before Bravo perished, caught at point by Sewnarine Chattergoon off Permaul for 27.
T&T went to the lunch break on 143 for three, with Ganga on 49 and Jason Mohammed six.

On the resumption, T&T lost the vital wicket of Jason Mohammed, caught at long-on by former West Indies youth middle-order batsman Asad Fudadin off Permaul for 14, as the home-team slipped to 159 for four.

Sherwin Ganga joined his captain and in spite of several stoppages for rain in the post lunch and tea period, the Ganga brothers held their nerve and figured in a useful 73-run fifth wicket partnership.

They were separated with the total on 232, when Sherwin Ganga was snapped up by close-in fieldsman Steven Jacobs off Permaul for a well played 36.
And shortly after, Daren Ganga, who looked well set to register his 21st first-class century, holed out to Bess at long-off from Permaul’s bowling, eight short of the milestone.
Ganga batted for 316 minutes, faced 262 balls and struck eight fours and three sixes.

The remaining batsmen failed to offer resistance to the probing spin attack employed by skipper Travis Dowlin and nearing the end, Bishoo chipped in with the wickets of Gibran Mohammed (5) , Rayad Emrit (4) and debutant Navin Stewart (5) as T&T’s innings folded in front of a small gathering of disappointed home fans at the Test venue.
