All set for Inter-Guiana Games 2009

– New points system put in place, says Sports Director

Director of Sports Neil Kumar says that all arrangements have been put in place for the upcoming Inter-Guiana Games and a new points system will replace the complicated one that was used previously.

“No one will have to worry as to how to tally their teams and athletes’ performances because this new system will take care of that,” Kumar told Stabroek Sports yesterday.

The Guyana leg of the games is set for April 23-26. Kumar, who along with Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony met representatives from Suriname and French Guiana, said that all the teething problems have been ironed out.

The finalizing of all arrangements including transportation, accommodation, security and medical have been discussed and the two delegations are satisfied, said Kumar.

Meanwhile, a new addition to the games will be male and female football. “Guyana will be hard pressed in this discipline,” Kumar said, adding that Guyana would have less than three weeks to come up with the two teams.

Another change that has been ratified by the three countries is the splitting of the games into male and female outfits.
Previously, Kumar said, at the end of the games a single winner was declared but this time round a female and a male Inter-Guiana Games champion will be decided.

And Minister Anthony has invited his Suriname and French Guiana counterparts here for the games.  According to Kumar, Dr Anthony said that with the ministers on hand a mini-summit can be held on how to enhance the games.
