World-leading win for Stewart at Jamaica International

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica’s Olympic silver medallist Kerron Stewart won the women’s 100 metres in a world-leading 10.92 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational meeting on Saturday night.

Stewart won ahead of American Marshavet Hooker (11.14) with Jamaica’s reigning Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser third in 11.15 seconds.

In two other world-leading performances at the National Stadium, Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson landed the men’s 400-metre hurdles in 48.42 seconds and Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills took the women’s 400 in 50.99.

Stewart, who shared silver – with her team-mate Sherone Simpson — in the 100-metre final in Beijing, won with authority as she eclipsed American Carmelita Jeter’s previous 2009 world best 10.96 seconds.

“It’s a good time. It’s better than what I ran last year, so I think I am right where I need to be,” Stewart told reporters after the race.

Fraser edged Jamaican Aleen Bailey (11.15) for third while two other Caribbean runners, Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste (11.17) and the British Virgin Islands’ Tahesia Harrigan (11.47) placed fifth and eighth, respectively.

Bailey won the 200 metres in 22.96 ahead of American Bianca Knight (23.15).
Williams-Mills, a bronze medallist at the 2007 World Championship, bettered American Monica Hargrove’s 51.00 as the quickest this year as she toppled top American Sanya Richards (51.12) with local runner Rosemarie Whyte third in 51.85.
