ZÜRICH, Switzerland, CMC – Usain Bolt will hope to use this year’s International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) Golden League meet at the Letzigrund Stadium to celebrate another triumphant appearance at a global event.
The Jamaican sprint marvel, who was crowned World Athlete-of-the-Year, will run the 100 metres at the meet, organisers announced yesterday. As it does, the meet falls five days after the 12th IAAF World Championships in the German city of Berlin, where Bolt hopes to repeat his 2008 Olympic performance, when he won two gold medals in World record time and helped Jamaica to a World record in the 4x100m relay.
If Bolt and the Jamaica 4×100 team can repeat their Beijing Olympic triumph and become world champions, they could also put together a side for the Zürich Trophy which will staged for the third time. Bolt will be one of three reigning Olympic champions and world record-holders attending the meet, along with Kenenisa Bekele of Kenya who won the 5000m at the meeting, and Russian Yelena Isinbayeva who will be pole vaulting.
“Between 2004 and 2008, we always had the strongest fields in the world, and it goes without saying that we are aiming at defending this position this year,” said meet director Patrick Magyar.
