Hikers dominate second night of action

Hikers male and female teams were victorious on the second night of action in the Guyana Hockey Board and Mr. Toppers-sponsored six-a-side  Indoor Hockey tournament on Wednesday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Jerry Bell netted three goals as Hikers `A’ swamped Old Fort ‘A’ 8-2, while Hikers women got the better of GCC Spartans 6-4 in a high scoring affair.

Hikers men who on the opening night clubbed the National squad 10-5, continued their impressive form against Old Fort who had also suffered defeat in their opening match of  the tournament.

Hikers led 3-2 at half time after Bell struck in the 3rd minute from a penalty corner but Askofu Simon equalized in the 9th minute before Randy Hope and Alex Gouveia netted for Hikers.

Simon completed his double but the Hikers held on to a slim lead at lemon time.
Hikers dominated the second half with Bell scoring twice while there were goals by Shane Samuels, Robert France and Renick Evelyn.
In the ladies encounter, Hikers staved off a strong challenge from Spartans after their captain Marie Munroe had scored twice in the 9th and 10th minutes of play before Marzana Fiedtkou pulled one back for Spartan in the 13th minute for a  Hikers 2-1 lead at half time.

Briawna Gordon equalized for Spartan in the 22nd minute but Michaela Harding pushed Hikers further ahead in the 24th.
Munroe found the back of the net once again and there were also goals from Avonda James and Cora Towler for the victors while Fiedtkou scored twice for Spartans in the second session.

GCC ‘A’ found themselves in a tough battle with their ‘B’ team and was held to a 1-1 draw.
The GCC juniors had taken a 1-0 lead at half time through a penalty corner strike by Andrew Xavier.
The pugnacious Dwayne Scott scored the equalizer for the ‘A’ side in the latter part of the second session.
The National men’s squad scored a  5-2 win over Western Dragons of West Demerara.
Trason Corbin and Selwyn Brant scored for the Dragons in a losing cause.

The goal scorers for the Nationals were John Abrahams, a double, and one each from Jason De Santos, Shane Samuels and Robert France.
The tournament continues this evening with seven matches at the same venue.
