Hikers continue unbeaten Hockey run

It became three in a row for Hikers men’s ‘A’ team following their fiercely fought 4-1 victory over upstarts Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ‘B’ as the Mr Toppers Six-a-side Indoor Hockey competition continued Friday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

GCC ‘B’ which was unbeaten in two earlier matches in the competition, held off Hikers for most of the first half until Robert France struck twice in the space of one minute to half time and Jerry Bell struck on the stroke of half time to give Hikers a 3-0 lead.

Hikers captain Devin Munroe struck in the  26th minute of play with a quick shot but Chris Xavier pulled one back for the determined GCC side just before the final whistle.

The GCC ‘A’ team racked up an early four goal-lead when they met the Nationals in their men’s ‘A’ division match, but the effects of the high-paced game took its  toll on the Bourda Boys who lost their momentum, allowing the Nationals to claw themselves back into contention to  pull off a 7-6 victory at full time.

Bell playing for the Nationals netted a hat-trick with Shane Samuels converting a double, while John Abrahams and Robert France scored one each.

Orland Semple and Dwayne Scott each scored two in GCC’s losing cause with Kevin Spencer and Alan Fernandes netting one each.

In the final men’s ‘A’ division clash of the evening the Old Fort ‘A’ trampled the Western Dragons by 10–0 with four goals from ace striker Aderemi Simon, a hat-trick from Dwayne Allen, a double from Jason Dos Santos and a solitary strike from Chris Low-Koan.

The GCC Tigers edged out Hikers 3-2 in their ladies encounter.

GCC never looked in trouble against the highly regarded Hikers as they amassed an easy two-goal lead by half time through two penalty corner conversions by Tiffany Solomon and Captain Sonia Jardine.

Jardine netted again in the 22nd minute to take the game to 3-0 in favour of the Tigers.

The Hikers made a late surge in the closing minutes converting twice through Amanda Garnett and Cora Towler.

Earlier in the evening the Spartans registered an upset victory over the Piranhas in the other ladies clash of the evening, winning 3-2 with goals from Gabriella Xavier, Marzana Fiedtkou and Briawna Gordon.  Ulrica Sutherland scored a double for the Piranhas.

In the men’s ‘B’ division the Carib Degenerates steamrolled their junior opponents Hikers ‘B’ by 3-0, with goals by Gregory Sills, Rawl Davson and Troy Peters.

The Western Dragons ‘B’ hammered Old Fort ‘B’ 4 goals to nil in the other men’s ‘B’ division clash of the night.  Austin Downes, Leroy Carroll, Damion Fraser and Cove Bowman each scored one for the Dragons.

At the mid-point of the tournament, the Hikers men led the men’s ‘A’ division with 9 points; followed by the Nationals with 6 points; GCC ‘A’ and ‘B’ with 4; Old Fort ‘A’, 3; and Western Dragons, 0.  The Carib Degenerates lead the men’s ‘B’ division with 6 points followed by the Western Dragons and Hikers with 3 each and Old Fort still to earn points.

In the ladies’ division the GCC Tigers secured 6 points, the GCC Spartans and the Hikers ladies three each, with the Piranhas rounding out the table with zero.

The tournament continues tomorrow evening with Hikers ‘B’ squaring off with Western Dragons in the first match at 18:00 hrs followed by GCC ‘A’ against Old Fort ‘A’.

Dragons will battle with Hikers ‘A’, Hikers will face off with Piranhas and GCC ‘B’ will tackle the National Men’s squad.
