It was nothing golden about Guyana’s start in the Parbo Bier cup in Suriname as they lost their opening game to Antigua 2-1 at the Andre Kampervene Stadium last evening.
According to team manager Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith, Guyana opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Peter Parks and thanks to some good defending which was being marshalled by captain Howard Lowe, the Jaguars went into the second half leading one nil.
But Griffith said that things took a turn for Guyana after striker Edison Gomes picked up his second yellow card which would give him an automatic red and reduced the side to ten men. He said this made it difficult for the Guyanese and Antigua began to attack relentlessly.
The islanders would equalize in the 79th minute and would close things off in the 90th minute.
“The team really played well, but is the red card that messed them up…when we went short of a player, things really got hard. The two goals didn’t come on no defence error or nothing, they were just some good shots….the team played well” were the words of team manager Griffith.
Ironically, the last time the two sides met in the 2008 Digicel Caribbean championships, Guyana went down by the same margin and had been looking for revenge in yesterday’s game.
Guyana will now face their long-time rivals Suriname tomorrow at 4 pm local time, as they seek redemption.
