National Race Walking champion Rudolph Mitchell won his 94th consecutive race walk event Sunday and afterwards declared that the victory was nothing more than a stroll in the park for him.
Yesterday’s event which ushered in a month of activities by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) began at Prairie International Hotel on the East Bank of Demerara and concluded at Soesdyke Methodist Church.
Mitchell completed the distance in under 50 minutes ahead of Jeremy Cornelius and Donna Ramkissoon who were second and third respectively.
“I feel good, in fact I feel great but my time could have been better. I didn’t have anyone to compete with so it was a walk in the park for me,” he said afterwards.
The Burnham Memorial Race Walk is set for next Saturday where Mitchell said he hopes to add to his string of victories.
The event will start outside the National Cultural Centre and will end at the burial spot of the late president of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Forbes Burnham at Seven Ponds in the Botanical Gardens.
On Sunday, a six lap race will be held at the National Park which will be followed by a workshop and a photographic exhibition.
