Cellink Plus 2009 Premier League Sunburst Camptown uproot GFC

– Alpha deal FC a slim defeat

Tournament front runners, Sunburst Camptown and Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United gained victories over the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Fruta Conquerors in the second round of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Cellink Plus Premier League on Sunday at the Tucville playfield.

Alpha and Camptown are now on 24 and 21 points at the top of the leader board after their 1 – 0 and 4 – 0 victories over Conquerors and GFC respectively.

Camptown, with the addition of national striker Nigel Codrington, had a pretty experienced and organized attack near goal.
Telson McKinnon drew first blood for Camptown in the 18th minute and then doubled up in the 26th minute when he found the opposition’s custodian out of his range.

The energetic Kwame La Fleur then extended Camptown’s lead to three when he scored five minutes before extra time.
Camptown had numerous opportunities to score in the second half, as did GFC, but the more successful team was the one to make full use of an opportunity to take the score to 4 – 0, compliments of Akeem Moore who found the back of the net in the 88th minute.

In the Alpha/FC showdown, home side Conquerors were out for revenge after falling 6 – 1 to the opposition in a previous showdown.Conquerors came out attacking and had Alpha on the defensive in the opening minutes and should have taken the lead when they were given a penalty shot which Gerald Grittens missed aiming to the left post.

However, Alpha slowly made their transition from defense to offense and was able to score through an Elso Diaz 41st minute strike.

The tournament continues Friday with Flamingo versus Fruta Conquerors and Camptown versus Pele. On Sunday, the Guyana Defence Force will battle GFC and Alpha will  engage  BK International Western Tigers.
