Smith smashes Sussex to solid win over Durham

LONDON, England,  CMC – Out-of-favour West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith blasted a stroke-filled half-century to propel Sussex to a comprehensive 193-run victory over Shiv Chanderpaul’s Durham in their Pro40 Division One match yesterday.

The right-handed Smith struck 54 from a mere 30 balls as Sussex piled up 277 for six from their allotted 40 overs, before bundling Durham out for a paltry 84 from 24.1 overs at Hove.
Smith, who has not donned Windies colours in over two years, cracked three fours and four sixes in an awesome hitting display, to give Sussex’s lower order impetus.

Striding to the wicket with Sussex on 160 for four in the 27th over, smith proceeded to dominate an 82-run, fifth wicket stand off 58 balls with Murray Goodwin who stroked 77 from 68 balls.

Jamaican Gareth Breese, who played a solitary Test for West Indies seven years ago, took one for 50 with his off-breaks.

When Durham batted, Chanderpaul was one of only four players in double figures with 11 as seamer James Kirtley grabbed five for 26 to bowl Sussex to victory.

The left-handed Chanderpaul stroked two fours in 16 balls at the crease before being caught at the wicket off Kirtley at 44 for five.

At the Rose Bowl in Southampton, Somerset’s West Indies discard Omari Banks finished with four for 120 as Hampshire were bowled out for 548 in their first innings on the second day of their Division One County match.

Banks, who took three wickets on the first day on Thursday, claimed another to post the best bowling figures.
In reply, Somerset were 98 for three at the close.
