Cellink Plus 2009 Premier League

Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and BK International Western Tigers were the latest teams in winners row as action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Cellink Plus Premier League continued with two matches on Friday night at the Tucville Playfield.

Alpha is now on 31 points and still command the leader board after sinking Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 2 – 0 in the feature match up while Western Tigers moved on to 13 points maintaining their fifth place position as they defeated Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 2 – 1.

The army team remains firm in the third position on 24 points, trailing second place holder Sunburst Camptown (25) while GFC remains at the bottom of the table on two points with no victory.

Premier League action resumes on Wednesday September 9 at the same venue where Sunburst Camptown and Fruta Conquerors meet in another ‘clash of the juices’ battle in the feature match at 8pm while Flamingo meet GFC in the preceding match at 6pm. Undoubtedly one of the three time defending champs toughest victory, they managed to out do the army team in the closing moments of the final half to snatch a much needed three points to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the league on the leader board.

The match saw the two seasoned teams playing terrific football all round the field but the highest ranked team in the country justified why they hold the crown as they pressed to the ended an recorded two goals through the energetic Dwight Peters and the determined Anthony Harding in the 83rd and 92nd minutes respectively.

Earlier, Western Tigers’ Nedd Fraser drew first blood for his team against the opposition in the 17th minute to lead 1 – 0 at the conclusion of the first 45 minutes of play.

Senior National Peter Parks got an opportunity to score when the second half resumed and made it an even game in the 51st minute.
Whining down to regulation time Tigers began getting a few good passes near goal and went ahead from a penalty kick given after a GFC player was blown for a foul tackle inside the 18-yard box.

Sherman David’s firm strike in the 85th minute which was the decider beat the GFC goal keeper to the left.
Meanwhile, the GFA has postponed the final of the Chubby Under-13 which was scheduled for this afternoon due to the unavailability of the Tucville Playfield.
