Tiwari hoping Guyana will be re-admitted into FIDE family

President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Errol Tiwari is hoping that Guyana will be re-admitted into the family of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) at the upcoming congress.
“I think our coming back is guaranteed,” Tiwari told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

The 80th annual FIDE Congress will be held in Kallithea, Greece from October 11-18 at the G-Hotels Complex and Tiwari assured that the matter will come up at the congress.

“It will come up at the congress but we will have to wait until after the congress to know the outcome,” he declared.

Guyana has been delinquent in payment of their dues to the world governing body for chess, an amount Tiwari was unable to put a figure to.
“We owe them a lot of money,” he said.
Tiwari said FIDE had written the GCF informing them of a decision to write off the debt but he stressed that such a decision would have to be taken at the congress.

“If they write off the debt then we will be able to start afresh,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tiwari also disclosed that the annual national championships will start later this month.

Prior to the championships there will be a qualification tournament which is open to all interested chess players.

Tiwari said the qualification tournament will be held at the St Stanislaus College and will be played on Saturdays and Sundays in an effort to “facilitate working people.”
