The activity was held at the Better Hope Community Centre Ground and in his opening remarks, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony stated that such activities helped to bring communities together and encouraged a sense of unity.

“Sport helps to break down those artificial barriers and that’s important, because what we want to do is use that powerful impact that sport has to create change,” Dr. Anthony said.

The Day of Interaction brought villages along the East Coast together for games of softball, dominoes, cricket, volleyball, table tennis, circle tennis, track and field and martial arts among other disciplines.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has planned to take the Day of Interaction to other regions across Guyana to encourage competitiveness between communities.

Dr. Anthony also said that his ministry was looking to include a category in the annual National Sports Awards to recognize the best community involved in sport and pledged that this would happen.

Director of Sport, Neil Kumar said he was very proud of the fact that various communities from along the East Coast had made efforts to participate.

“I’m really impressed with the turnout and I’m very proud of the different communities who turned up. We were even able to give the ground a facelift because it was not in a good state when we came here.

We cleaned it up and put up two basketball backboards and a volleyball court. It is our way of rewarding the community for its efforts.”

The Director of Sport made the closing remarks before trophies were handed out to the winners of each sporting category.
