Super Sunday as GFF National League intensifies

As the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) inaugural Super League nears its climax, the action on the field is expected to be just as exciting with several teams  fighting for survival and to make the final four.

Five matches are scheduled for today with double headers at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground in Linden and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda.

20091025standingThe final encounter  will take place at the Blairmont Community Development Centre  ground in Berbice.

A resurgent  Guyana Defence Force side which had a slow start in the early stages of the League will square off against Rosignol United at  Blairmont.

After a blazing start the Berbicians are now outside of the bracket of the final four compared to their opponents.

The Army men are on 10 points from six matches. They have picked up three wins from six matches  with two losses and a draw.

Rosignol United after seven games are on nine points. They have won three games and lost four.

A win today is crucial for the Berbicians since losing will certainly put them way out of contention of the final four.

Up in the mining town of Linden, hometown teams, Milerock and Bakewell Topp XX, who are ranked eighth and sixth respectively, will certainly have their work cut out looking to give their home fans something to cheer about and knowing only wins will do the trick.

Though their rankings are different the two sides both have the same amount of points (7) and are both in must-win situations.

Topp XX will tackle Buxton United; a team which is presently last in the League, in the opening game at 18:00 hours and with three matches each remaining, both teams would want to make some ground.  Game two will see Milerock facing the ever improving Seawall United from 20:00 hours. The West Demerara team is fourth after six matches played, winning two, drawing three and only losing once. This will be their first game outside of their home ground at Uitvlugt and it will be interesting to see how they will cope.

However after witnessing some of their earlier matches against stronger teams, a tight game is expected.

Down in the Garden City, playing at the World famous GCC ground Bourda, second placed Sunburst Camptown and Bartica’s Liquid Gold will match cleats from 13:30 hours.

Camptown had a relatively slow start to the tournament losing their first two games but rebounded well and with only two matches left to play, they are on 11 points. Based on the flow of the tournament, only a win can solidify them reaching the final four.

Liquid Gold on the other hand have had a rocky tournament and now sit in ninth position.

After six matches they have picked up two wins and  a draw and have lost three times.

A win tonight would give the Barticians a slim chance of climbing into the final four.

In the other match at the GCC ground, the ‘Hammers’ Alpha United who have ruled supreme in the League so far, will tackle the Victoria Kings.

The East Coast squad is seventh on seven points from seven games with two wins, one draw and four loses. Alpha United is standing tall with 17 points from seven matches, gaining five wins, two draws and is only undefeated team in the League.

Picking up a win is the only way Victoria Kings could keep their final four hopes alive but since Alpha will want to keep their perfect run, it will be game on tonight.
